What Is Microsoft 365 Tenant-to-Tenant Migration?
A Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migration moves all users, data, and services from one Microsoft 365 organisation account (tenant) to another. This is required when two organisations merge, when a subsidiary is divested, or when a company wants to consolidate multiple Microsoft 365 environments into one.
Unlike a simple email migration, tenant-to-tenant moves involve complex identity management, permission mapping, coexistence configuration, and coordination across Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams — all at the same time.
Microsoft does not provide a native tool for tenant-to-tenant migrations. This is why specialist expertise — and the right third-party migration platform — is essential to get it right.

Our Proven 5-Phase Migration Process
Every Office 365 tenant migration follows the same battle-tested methodology we've refined across 500+ projects
Discovery & Scoping
1–3 daysWe inventory your source tenant: total users, mailbox sizes, OneDrive data, SharePoint sites, Teams channels, distribution lists, security groups, third-party integrations, and compliance requirements. This produces a detailed migration scope document and project timeline.
Target Tenant Preparation
1–2 daysBefore a single mailbox moves, we configure the destination tenant completely. User accounts are created, licenses assigned, security groups recreated, domain ownership verified, and compliance policies matched to the source tenant's configuration.
Pilot Migration
1–2 daysWe migrate a pilot group of 5–10 users (typically the IT team) to validate the process end-to-end. We verify email flow, OneDrive access, SharePoint permissions, Teams functionality, and Outlook connectivity before scaling to the full organisation.
Full Migration Execution
4–12 daysWe migrate the remaining users in department-based waves. Continuous delta sync ensures the target mailboxes stay current with the source throughout the migration window. We monitor every batch in real-time and resolve errors immediately.
Validation & Handover
1–2 weeksWe verify data integrity, test all functionality, reconfigure third-party apps, update DNS records, and provide user-facing setup instructions. After sign-off, we enter the 30-day post-migration support period where our engineers remain on-call for your team.

What Our Clients Say
500+ tenant migrations completed, 4.9/5 average rating
“We merged two companies with separate Microsoft 365 tenants. Workspace Migration handled 340 users, 8 SharePoint sites, and our entire Teams environment in under 3 weeks. Zero data loss, zero complaints from users. I was expecting chaos — instead it was the smoothest IT project we've ever run.”
“After our acquisition we had 6 months to consolidate tenants. The team at Workspace Migration ran a proper discovery, identified risks we hadn't even thought of (our Teams bots and Power Automate flows), and had a plan for everything. Cutover happened on a Saturday night and by Monday morning users couldn't even tell anything had changed.”
“We had a complex hybrid Exchange environment alongside our Microsoft 365 tenant — a scenario most vendors said was too risky without multi-month engagement. Workspace Migration's team had seen it before, proposed a clean approach, and executed it in 4 weeks. The 30-day support period was also genuinely useful — they resolved three post-migration issues within hours each time.”
Industries We Serve
We've completed Microsoft 365 tenant migrations across virtually every sector
Complex Scenarios We Handle
Common challenges in M365 tenant-to-tenant migrations — and how we solve them
No Native Microsoft Migration Tool
Challenge: Microsoft provides no built-in tool for tenant-to-tenant moves — unlike standard email migrations.
Our approach: We use enterprise-grade third-party platforms (BitTitan, AvePoint, Quest) included in our service fee. No tool purchase needed.
Microsoft Teams Migration
Challenge: Teams channels, files, tabs, and chat history are complex — native Microsoft tools cannot move them.
Our approach: Specialist Teams migration tools migrate channels, files, and tabs. Chat history is archived or exported depending on compliance needs.
SharePoint Permission Mapping
Challenge: SharePoint permissions reference user identities which change between tenants — they break without proper mapping.
Our approach: We build a user mapping file linking source to target identities. Migration tools use this to reassign all permissions automatically.
Hybrid Exchange Environments
Challenge: On-premises Exchange co-existing with Exchange Online adds significant complexity to the migration path.
Our approach: We coordinate on-premises Exchange mailbox migration in parallel with cloud mailboxes using the correct batch approach for each.
Third-Party App Dependencies
Challenge: Every integrated app (Salesforce, Power Automate, DocuSign) is tied to the source tenant and must be re-authorised.
Our approach: Full app inventory during discovery. Detailed reconnection runbook executed on cutover day — no integration left behind.
Compliance & Legal Holds
Challenge: Organisations with eDiscovery holds, retention policies, or legal hold requirements cannot risk data gaps during migration.
Our approach: We maintain compliance policies throughout. eDiscovery holds are transferred to the target tenant before any data moves.
Microsoft 365 Tenant Migration FAQ
Everything you need to know about tenant-to-tenant migration costs, timelines & process
For small organisations (under 50 users), a full tenant migration takes 3–7 business days. Mid-market companies (50–500 users) typically complete in 2–4 weeks. Enterprise deployments (500+ users) are scoped individually but usually run 4–8 weeks. We provide a detailed project timeline during the free discovery call before any work begins.
Small Business (10–50 users) is $40 per mailbox for Exchange Online only, delivered in 24–48 hours with a 50GB data limit — minimum project $400 (10 users), maximum $2,000 (50 users × $40). Mid-Market (50–500 users) is $30 per mailbox for the full suite including SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Users with more than 50GB of data require an Exchange Plan 2 license and are priced at $50 per 100GB of data migrated. Enterprise pricing is scoped after discovery. All pricing includes migration tool licensing, project management, and 30 days of post-migration support.
We minimise downtime through coexistence configuration. Users continue receiving and sending emails throughout the migration. The only interruption is a brief cutover window of 1–2 hours (typically scheduled at midnight or on a weekend) when Outlook profiles are updated and MX records are switched. Most users experience less than 15 minutes of Outlook reconfiguration.
Teams chat history cannot be migrated natively — Microsoft does not provide a tool for this. We use specialist third-party tools (BitTitan, AvePoint, or Quest) to migrate Teams channels, files, and tabs. For chat history, we can either archive it for compliance purposes or export it to a readable format. We discuss this during discovery so there are no surprises.
Email addresses stay the same if you're using a custom domain. We configure your domain in the target tenant before migration begins, so all external senders continue reaching you at the same address. Internal UPNs may change if required by the new tenant's naming convention, but we handle all Outlook reconfiguration automatically.
Yes. We support both phased and all-at-once (big bang) migration approaches. Phased migration is recommended for organisations with 100+ users — we migrate in department waves over 2–4 weeks, allowing IT teams to validate each wave before proceeding. This significantly reduces risk and gives users time to adjust.
Yes, with proper user mapping. SharePoint and OneDrive permissions reference user identities, which change between tenants. We build a user mapping file that links every source user to their target account. Migration tools use this to correctly reassign all permissions, preserving your entire security and sharing model in the new tenant.
We inventory all connected third-party applications during the discovery phase (Salesforce, Zoom, DocuSign, Power Automate, etc.). We create a detailed reconnection runbook specifying the re-authorisation steps for each app. On cutover day, we work through the runbook systematically so no integration is missed or left broken.
All OneDrive for Business files, folder structures, sharing permissions, and version history are migrated to the target tenant. Shared drives (SharePoint Document Libraries) are also fully migrated including site structure, metadata, content types, and permissions. We run a delta sync before final cutover to capture any last-minute changes.
We have extensive experience with hybrid scenarios. We coordinate with your on-premises Exchange infrastructure, using the Exchange Admin Center migration batch approach for cloud-hosted mailboxes and PowerShell for on-premises mailboxes. Coexistence connectors ensure seamless mail flow throughout. See our Exchange hybrid migration guide for the full technical process.
All engagements include 30 days of post-migration support at no extra charge. This covers Outlook reconfiguration issues, permission problems, any items that did not migrate correctly, and general user questions. We assign a dedicated engineer who knows your project for the entire support period — not a generic helpdesk.
No. Migration tool licensing (BitTitan MigrationWiz, AvePoint FLY, or Quest On Demand — whichever best fits your project) is included in our service fee. You do not need to purchase, set up, or manage any migration tooling yourself.
